Rock Cutting

challenge for the drilling industry to overcome to these undesirable phenomena

In our facilities, single cutter tests are performed to reveal the mechanism of rock cutting and give rise to data that give an insight into PDC-bit performance in the field. Numerical experiments are also carried out in order to observe a particular condition of each borehole drilling and an analytical computational model is used to evaluate the cut efficiency of the PDC-bit.

How can we help you?

Below is a short description of the key research areas. For further details or new researches, feel free to contact us.

Single Cutter Test

The test provides the vertical and cutting force necessary to achieve a given depth of cut (DOC). The cutter can be evaluated at different Back-Rake and Side-Rake angles. The single cutter equipment is able to provide three separate pressure on a cylindrical rock sample: The confining pressure, pore pressure and borehole pressure.

Single Cutter Numerical Experiments

Two-dimensional and three-dimensional single cutter simulations are achieved to analyze the variation of Mechanical Specific Energy (MSE) to cut a borehole rock through varying three parameters: Depth of Cut (DOC), confining pressure and the cutter geometry.

Analytical Computational Model for PDC Bits

The BRCPDC analytical computational model uses single-cutter test data and is make used in order to predicting cutter forces and wear on PDC bits as well as integrated drilling efficiency parameters such as weight-on-bit (WOB), rate-of-penetration (ROP) and drilling torque.
